Spray pads, splash pads, wet decks, spray parks and other water features are becoming more and more popular and common. These interactive water play areas appeal to all ages but especially to young children. Often the children are under five years old and not yet potty trained. Although these venues may not have any standing water, the spray water will rinse any contaminants that might be on the bathers into the drain water which is re-circulated. These contaminants include viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms including cryptosporidium which is the number one cause of Recreational Water Illnesses (RWI). This is the main reason they are considered Increased Risk Aquatic Venues.
RWI are caused by microorganisms in and around the water. Some of the microorganisms are very tolerant to chlorine. In particular, cryptosporidium (crypto for short) has become the leading cause of swimming pool-related outbreaks of diarrhea involved illness. Chlorine alone cannot clean a pool infected with crypto. A single outbreak can sicken thousands and can lead to immediate shut-down of the infected facility resulting in sometimes devastating financial loss.
RWI (Recreational Water Illness) outbreaks are increasing; up from 15 outbreaks a year (1993–2002) to 34 outbreaks a year (2003–2012). This is one of the reasons the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) has developed the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC). Federal, state, and local public health officials and the aquatics sector formed an unprecedented collaboration to create the MAHC.
The MAHC is a guidance document based on scientific research and best practices designed to help local and state authorities make swimming and other water-related activities safer and healthier. Although the MAHC is not Federal Law, more and more local and state governing authorities are adopting the code. In the MAHC, it is recommended that public pools use Secondary Disinfection – specifically either ozone or UV systems. And it is required for Increased Risk Aquatic Venues: wading pools, therapy pools, swim school pools, spray pads and other interactive water play venues.
